Compétences acquises
  The overall objective of this course is to provide the student with a strong understanding of the VMware vCenter Configuration Manager (VCM) console, reports, compliance, patching, administration, and post installation.

  This course is intended for system administrators who have VCM and VCM Patching installed and want to collect and analyze data from their VCM managed systems.

Préalables
  None. Experience as a system administrator is very useful.

Hands-On Lab
  The VMware® Virtual datacenter (VDC) is used for all hands-on activities. Internet access is essential. For online classes, each student must have a computer system with high-speed Internet access. RDP is used to access the VMware lab systems. For onsite classes, each student must have a computer system and high-speed Internet access.

Day 1
Module 300: Overview and Concepts
  • Learn how VCM works at a high level
  • Learn how machines are discovered and licensed and how agents are installed
  • Be able to explain what a collection is and why it is important
Module 301: Configuration Manager Console
  • Learn how to sort, filter, and pivot data in a VCM grid
  • Learn how to explain the function and content of each node in the console and the ramifications of performing actions in the user interface
  • Be able to change machine groups and explain the importance of using machine groups with the console
Day 2
Module 302: Configuration Manager Reports
  • Learn how to create and run wizard-based SRS table, grid, and graph reports and create simple SQL reports
  • Be able to explain the different areas of reporting with the Reports slider and the difference between an SRS report and a SQL report
 
Module 303: Configuration Manager Compliance
  • Learn how to run compliance templates that are provided with VCM and properly interpret the results
  • Be able to explain filters, rules, rule groups, templates, and exceptions
  • Be able to create simple rules, filters, and templates to monitor configuration compliance
Module 304: Configuration Manager Patching
  • Be able to explain the function and purpose of patching and how to create assessment templates
  • Be able to explain the bulletin update process and how to deploy patches in their network environment
Day 3
Module 400: Configuration Manager Administration
  • Modify settings as required to optimize their VCM installation
  • Create new filters and filter sets to collect custom data
  • Understand the difference between a filter set and a filter set group
  • Create automatic discovery rules of all types
  • Manually add machines to the database
  • Create alternative sources to deploy agents
  • License machines and install agents
  • Understand the difference between machines in Available status and in Ignored status
  • Create machine snapshots
  • Create static and dynamic machine groups
  • Create VCM access rules and roles to restrict access and functionality
  • Add users and assign roles
  • Create scheduled jobs for collections, reports, and compliance
  • Be able to evaluate job history and interpret problem areas
  • Create alert rules and assign them appropriately to machine groups
