This one-day instructor-led course gives a succinct overview of the process of creating, publishing, and using Web services. Students learn the role of Web services in the enterprise and the technologies typically used in Web services. The course identifies the components of a SOAP message and Web Services Description Language (WSDL) document, looks at the registries where the Web services can be published, and discusses examples of different types of Web services.

  After completing this course, you should be able to:
 

  • Describe the role of Web services in a service-oriented architecture (SOA)

  • List how different IBM products produce and consume Web services

  • Describe the standards used in Web services

  • Explain the role of Extensible Markup Language (XML) in Web services

  • Describe the purpose of WSDL

  • Read and describe a basic WSDL document

  • Describe how WSDL documents relate to an underlying service implementation

  • Create WSDL documents without tool assistance from an existing application

 

  • Explain the purpose of SOAP

  • Read and describe a basic SOAP message

  • Describe the transports commonly used in Web services, such as Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Java Messaging Service (JMS)

  • Explain how Web service clients are created

  • Describe issues in Web services interoperability

  • Summarize the role of an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) and how it relates to Web services

  • Explain the role of a registry in SOA
