Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) is the most commonly accepted architectural model for Data Warehouse data acquisition, movement, and manipulation. However, many implementors have discovered through trial, that a simplified ETL approach is inadequate for complex enterprise and Very Large Database (VLDB) Data Warehouse implementations. ETL alone is insufficient when considering the many heterogeneous sources, real-time complex transformation and cleansing requirements, and populating many diverse Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) schemas all common in even the simplest of warehouses. These complexities combined with the fact that a single tool or program module cannot provide all the function required for your warehouse, lead implementors to build unmanageable systems comprised of many independent tools and hand coded programs. Learn how to avoid the unmanageable. Complete classroom exercises to learn practical approaches, tools, and techniques required for building the Data Warehouse populating subsystem, which is responsible for all acquisition, movement and transformation of data into the Data Warehouse and throughout its components.
Course content considers both one and two-tiered VLDB data warehouse architectures, which makes this course suitable, whether you are involved in building corporate-wide VLDB data warehouses or are dealing with VLDB issues for large data marts. Considerations for low latency real-time or active data warehouses is also included.
The majority of the time in this course is spent on exercises and case studies.
Review and evaluate Architected solution models for VLDB and standard Data Warehouse populating subsystems. Map these solution models onto techniques and commercially available software tools for: |
| Extracting source data | |
Capturing of source data changes
Reconstruction of consistent change records
Integration of structural changes to the extracted or captured data in the VLDB populating process
Cleansing source data | |
Loading of data in the target data warehouse databases and adding derived information
In addition, investigate the problem of setting up work-in-progress process management for populating the warehouse. |

Compétences acquises |
| |
Assess solution models
Understand the issues involved in the architectural design and construction of a populating subsystem for both VLDB and standard data warehouse environments
Identify appropriate solution models for solving data warehouse populating issues
| |
Perform architectural design techniques to further develop and adapt solution models, taking into account representative data warehouse requirements and aspects of the software environment, then complicated by typical business issues and problems
Apply techniques for designing components of the architectural design solution in a specific software platform context
Assess the use of vendor tools for constructing and integrating a data warehouse populating subsystem. ETI*Extract, Ascential Integrity, Ascential Enterprise Integration Suite, IBM Data Propagator, and DB2 Data Warehouse Center are used as representative examples of such tools
